A Little About Our History
Auburn university Aviation was established in 1942 as the Auburn School of
Aviation, a department of the School of Engineering responsible for instruction,
research, and extension activities in flight education and related aviation subjects.
The school served a major function in its early days in training civilian pilots for
service in the Army Air Corps during World War II. Since that time the School of
Aviation has grown with the Aviation industry and has trained pilots for service in
the Army Air Corps for all segments of aviation, both civil and military. Today,
Auburn University Aviation operates as a separate Department and its Aviation
Management curriculum, and to students in all other departments who choose
aviation courses as electives. In addition, Auburn University Aviation provides
flight training to people in the surrounding communities. The flight school is
operated under FAA approval as an Air Agency, and has authority for examining
its own graduates. Flight training is conducted under FAR Part 141 and FAR Part
