AU Aviation operates as a division under the Vice President for Administrative
Services and serves as a laboratory of practical instruction for students enrolled in the curricula of
Aviation Management and Aerospace Engineering as well as other University curricula.
Flight courses offered lead to FAA private, commercial, multi-engine, instrument and flight instructor certificates and ratings. Flight courses are offered to both University students and the general public. The department is fully certified by the FAA as an Air Agency with examining authority for private, commercial, instrument, and multi-engine courses. The department is authorized by the FAA to conduct FAA flight practical tests and certify pilots for various certificates and ratings.
The department operates the University-owned 438-acre Auburn-Opelika Robert G. Pitts Airport. Operated as a State of Alabama public facility, the Airport is conveniently located within three miles of the University campus, with two lighted, 400-foot, paved runways; a two-story administration building; two large hangars, three five-unit hangars, one three-unit T-hangar and one five-unit Planeport. The department currently operates 18 single and multi-engine aircraft, plus three
flight simulators.
In addition to flight training, other services such as fuel, maintenance and airplane storage,
and aircrew amenities are provided at the airport.
AU Aviation also provides air transportation for University faculty and staff on official University business.
